Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Your Options

One of the best wine and Liqueurs accessories is the wine bucket. Wine buckets allow you to present your wine or champagne in style, and so they are especially useful for when you are throwing parties or get togethers. There are even wine buckets that you can buy that hook onto the side of your table, so even when your table is full and you have no more room you can still fit your wine bucket on there.

Another accessory is the corkscrew, which is actually one of the essential wine accessories because you need this to actually open the bottle. There is a seemingly endless selection when it comes to corkscrews, and so you can really make your decision based on your own personal taste and style. Just make sure that it is one which is easy for you to handle and use so that you do not have any trouble when it comes time to pop open the bottle.

Wine glasses are also very important accessories, and you want to make sure that you have the right glasses for each different occasion. For instance you may want to have more casual wine glasses for when it is just you and your partner, and more expensive, detailed glasses for when you have company.

Wine racks are useful if you tend to have a large selection of wine sitting around your house, whereas if you generally only purchase wine every once in a while then you really have no need for a wine rack for storage. Wine racks are great because they give you a place to store your wine where you can show it off beautifully and yet not take up any more space in your kitchen or den than you need to.

There are many great companies that offer wine accessories and Wine Making Recipes, and so you can really go out and have some fun when you are looking around for wine accessories to add to your collection.

Does Java Prevent Hangovers And Sober You Up?

Friday, October 24th, 2008

It’s a myth that has been played out in movies since the black and white days. We have all seen a lot of slapstick comedy movies where one fella gets a little too drunk, and his buddies pour hot coffee down his throat as was to sober him up. They tend to slap his face a little during the process, but it’s the coffee that is said to bring him out of his stupor. But does it really work?
Sorry folks, I know you think it does, but, no, coffee does not offer any sobering effects after a night with your Uncle Bud. Sure, coffee perks you up and gets you going with a blast of caffeine, but it’s not any good at lowering blood alcohol levels. Maybe you should reach for a glass of water or large bottle of Gatorade instead

One thing though, coffee is good for your hang-over.

Alcohol, Drinking and hangovers
Alcohol is great at giving you thumping headaches, mainly because it enlarges cranial blood vessels and causes you to urinate a lot, bringing on dehydration. Caffeine, on the other hand, is great at doing the opposite. It actually constricts the cranial blood vessels, making it an effective way to combat hangover blues. It is also 99% water, so it helps to hydrate.

So next time you are out on the town and need to be sober before getting home, try cutting back on the consumption instead of sucking down black coffee.

Get Consistent Daily Java Using Coffee Pods At Home

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

I have been a coffee drinker now for about 10 years. It seems these days that I just cannot get going in the morning without that first injection of caffeine.

Years ago, as I was just getting my coffee drinking habit formed, I’d fire up my trusty stainless steel coffee maker and brew up some fresh java for my ride to work. But there was a problem with this ritual, and it was a serious one. The issue was that I just could not seem to get the coffee consistent to the exact same taste, body, aroma and strength each time. No matter how careful I was in measuring out the beans or pre-ground coffee, it was just never the same each day; until now!

I have found the solution to inconsistency in daily coffee drinking: the coffee pod.
Here is a definition of exactly what a coffee pod is:
“…coffee pods are freshly roasted coffee, ground perfect, tampered to the correct pressure and then encapsulated in a paper filter-like covering.”

The nice thing here is that your coffee is made perfectly every time because the beans and coffee are pre-measured at a factory, and not in your kitchen on-the-fly. In addition, there is no mess to clean up after I make my single cup coffee each day.
Now the only thing I have to be concerned with is the cream and sugar which are also pre-measured because I buy them that way! Now I have perfectly consistent coffee each day, and that makes me happy.

But coffee pods have many more uses than just for your home brewed coffee. My church has a big machine where coffee pods are used. You stick in 50 cents, pick out your flavored coffee pod (Columbian, breakfast blend, etc), slide it into the machine and press a button. I like this because it means less mess and once again, consistency.

The final key to that perfectly consistent cup of coffee comes in the water you use. It may not sound like much, but water definitely makes a difference. I have a reverse osmosis drinking water system at my house that gives me the cleanest and purest water around.

So to recap: the perfect and consistent cup of java can be achieved with just a few simple steps including the use of pure water, coffee pods and pre-measured cream and sugar packs. If you are anything like me, you will appreciate that perfect cup of coffee done right, day after day; consistently.

Fun And Easy Cooking With A Fish Cooker

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

It might seem to be a contradictory statement, but slow cookers can actually be a wonderful time-saving appliance. For numerous people, a slow cooker has become their most prized and most used of all the small appliance cooking products that they have in their kitchens.

While people don’t immediately equate a slow cooker with a fast meal, the reality is that effective use of a crock pot means that the cook spends less time, not more, in their kitchen.

slow cooker
Not only does using a slow cooker mean spending less time cooking and more time with the family, but at the same time they can even provide better and more nutritious meals. While this article is not intended to stir up a controversy, there are now some considerable concerns about potential negative effects of micro-waving foods. Using a slow cooker delivers a great deal of convenience, while avoiding these possible microwave issues.

One of the best things about slow cookers is that people across the board, from the kids to the adults to guests, tend to be in agreement that meals cooked in crock-pots are often some of the most delectable that they have ever had. This is because the food has time to gently cook and the full flavors are released and can be savored and enjoyed when eaten.

electric fryers
At the same time, a slow cooker does not have any problems with hot spots; foods don’t dry out or become rubbery. These are some of the problems that occur with food that is fully prepared in a microwave oven; yet these problems simply do not exist when a meal is allowed to slowly and gently cook for a few hours.

One of the best things about using a slow cooker, and which has helped to make crock-pot cooking so popular, is that you can prepare all of the ingredients for the meal before getting drawn into a busy and over-scheduled day.

You simply place the ingredients into the slow cooker and follow the instructions in the recipe for the heat setting, put the lid on the crock-pot, and then go about your day. The meal basically cooks itself while you are at work, running errands or managing the household.

clean deep fryer
In many cases, busy mothers will use a slow cooker in conjunction with other time-saving cooking products, such as funnel cake fryers, cool touch deep fryer or rice cookers. These other appliances can be useful in helping to prepare other elements of a complete meal, although more and more cooks are enjoying the benefits of the “one pot” meals that can very effectively be cooked in a slow cooker.

Some people have the mistaken idea that you are quite limited in the types of foods and recipes that can be prepared with slow cookers. But, this is simply not true, at least not these days when you can find hundreds of recipe books that have dozens of delicious recipes for crock-pot cooking. With time, many people learn to adapt just about any recipe to slow cooking methods.

Are There Health Benefits From Drinking Red Wine?

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

With so much conflicting information, it’s hard to know what you should or shouldn’t be eating and drinking to stay healthy. While there is no firm medical proof, most studies point to health benefits from drinking red wine.

What Can Red Wine Do?

While red wine and Fruit Wine isn’t considered a cure all (and certainly not a substitute for visiting your doctor), there are some widely agreed upon benefits to drinking red wine. The most promising benefit is that red wine is believed to protect against certain forms of cancer & heart disease. In fact, some studies show up to a 30%-50% reduction in heart disease of those who consumed a glass of red wine each night. It also appears to have a positive effect on cholesterol & blood pressure. And finally, drinking red wine has been shown to lower the risk of heart attacks in middle-aged (30-50 years old) adults.

Why Red Wine?

Experts started to study the benefits of red wine and Liqueurs when they started to notice a correlation between populations who drank red wine regularly and lower incidences of disease. This was especially evident in the Mediterranean region, where red wine is plentiful. They also studied the so-called “French Paradox,” where the French have a lower rate of heart disease and obesity even though they consume a higher-fat diet. Most of the benefits of red wine come from the antioxidants present in it. Studies show that red wine has a high concentration of antioxidants, which are known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. The antioxidants have been found to increase HDL cholesterol (the good kind of cholesterol) and help prevent blood clots and plaque from forming on arteries.

How Much Should I Drink to See the Health Benefits of Red Wine?

Most experts believe that it takes very little to see the health benefits of red wine and Homemade Wine Recipes. Moderation is truly the key – one glass of wine per day for women and one or two glasses for men. Keep in mind, as well, that a glass of wine is considered to be four ounces. This isn’t to say that you should be drinking a bottle of red wine each night. In fact, most experts believe that the health benefits of red wine are lost if wine is consumed to excess. There is also the concern that those who have a family history of alcoholism or other pre-existing health conditions should not be drinking red wine. In these cases, the benefits do not outweigh the risks.

Presenting The Perfect Cheeseboard

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Relaxing with a drink and a selection of cheese and biscuits is the perfect way to round off a meal, whether the occasion is a formal dinner party or you are simply entertaining friends and family. A cheeseboard offers an alternative to dessert for your guests, who may not all have a sweet tooth! There are a huge range of cheeses now available in delicatessens and supermarkets, meaning that your cheeseboard can have a truly international flavour.

As a guideline, offer a selection of between four and six cheeses. Make sure that these are a good mix of the different types of cheese, for example, hard and soft cheeses, mild and strong flavours, familiar and unusual tastes. Hopefully that way the cheeseboard will appeal to everyone. Include some fresh fruit on the platter, such as sliced apples, fresh figs and grapes. This will not only add to the presentation, but the flavours will make a great accompaniment to the cheese itself.

Here are a selection of popular cheeses from around the world:

Hard cheeses (“curado” or “semi curado”)
Cheddar – The most popular English cheese. Available in both Red and White varieties. Choose mature or extra-mature for a tangy taste and plenty of “bite”.

Red Leicester – A rich golden red cheese with a milder taste. Should appeal to all.

Edam - Dutch semi-hard cheese with a lower fat content. Has a mild taste and a slightly “rubbery” texture.

Gruy?re – Hard Swiss cheese with a strong flavour.

Jarlsberg – Danish cheese with a strong, almost nutty flavour and a hard, rubbery texture.

Red Windsor - Red veined cheese with a tangy flavour. The red veins are due to the addition of port.

Blue cheeses
It is generally wise to include at least one blue cheese on your cheeseboard.

Stilton - Classic creamy, blue-veined cheese. Semi-hard and quite salty. One of the milder blue cheeses.

Dolcelatte – Italian full flavoured , creamy blue cheese.

Gorgonzola – The Daddy of blue cheeses! Very strong Italian blue cheese with a characteristic smell. Not for the faint hearted!

Danish Blue – Another strong cheese from Denmark.

Blue Brie – Mild blue version of the popular soft cheese. Appeals to almost all.

Soft cheeses
Boursin – Soft spreadable cheese with characteristic garlic and herb flavour.

Camembert – Soft creamy cheese with a thick, soft white crust. Milder flavour. If buying a round of this cheese, it is ready to eat when the top crust bulges out slightly.

Brie – Soft French cheese with a mild and creamy taste. Comes in several different varieties, such as brie with herbs or blue brie.

Goats cheese
There are many different types of goat?s cheese on the market. Generally soft cheeses with a mild flavour.

If this doesn?t give you enough choices for the cheeseboard, have a good look around your local delicatessen. Many specialist cheeses come in unusual flavours. The addition of different herbs, chutney, beer, fruit and nuts makes for interesting and unusual flavour combinations.

Don?t be afraid to ask for a sample to taste, to judge which cheeses you think will appeal to your guests. And ask for advice – the store should be able to help you make a selection which will complement the flavours of the other dishes on the menu.

If you thought cheese was just for sandwiches, think again! And you don’t just have to serve cheese with crackers some mini savoury cupcakes would be fun.

Happy Eating
